THE PROJECT:
Located in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Linda G. Mora Elementary School is the newest school to join the North Side Independent School District. With an enrollment of 106,066 students encompassing 119 campuses, the North Side ISD is the fourth-largest school district in Texas.

THE CHALLENGE:
With construction nearly complete, the North Side ISD was seeking a reliable, watertight roof to safeguard their newest elementary. They needed a tough roof that could weather the brutal conditions and scorching heat of South Texas. In addition, the roof also had to comply with local reflectivity requirements.

Due to the proven performance of our APP modified bitumen roofing and the quality workmanship of our DACs, school administrators turned to DERBIGUM to recommend a durable, long-term waterproofing solution.

THE SOLUTION:
Mora Elementary first received two layers of Derbiboard CA, a high performance polyiso insulation board. Besides improving thermal efficiency, Derbiboard CA provides a clean, smooth base for roofing systems. Next, one layer of ½ inch coverboard was installed, providing an additional layer of fire resistance and hail protection. Both system layers were jointly secured to the steel deck with metal fasteners.

Like all DERBIGUM systems, two redundant membrane layers were installed using Derbibase Ultra (120 mil) and Derbicolor GP-FR-CR (180 mil). Both membranes are reinforced with polyester and fiberglass mat for greater tensile strength and dimensional stability. To top it off, Derbicolor GP-FR-CR’s bright white granule surfacing provided an extra layer of protection while also meeting the district’s reflectivity requirements.

One of the biggest hurdles on this project came when incorrectly laid brickwork delayed installation of the roof’s cap sheet. Thankfully due to the weathering capabilities and UV resistance of our APP polymer bitumen, Derbibase Ultra passed the test with flying colors.

This was our first project working with the North Side ISD. It’s no secret, in business, first impressions are crucial. Thanks to the diligence and expertise of our DAC and technical team, this project’s success will be the springboard to long-term partnership between DERBIGUM and the North Side ISD.
